Scottish pianist and arranger Malcolm Edmonstone moved to London in 1998 to study at The Guildhall School, where he studied with Pete Churchill and Simon Purcell, attaining both Bachelors and Masters degrees. He was given his first break in his third undergraduate year when asked to tour with the late singing legend Marian Montgomery.
Since then he has been active both as a player and writer, notably with Jacqui Dankworth, with whom he tours regularly and recorded the album 'Detour Ahead' on Candid Records. He has worked prominently with Laurie Holloway on BBC1's hit show, Stricly Come Dancing, playing and sharing the writing duties. More recently Malcolm has been working with comedian Steve Furst, developing a warm tribute to Anthony Newley which has attracted rave reviews during it's initial run at London's Pigalle Club.
He has appeared on all of the major UK TV networks and has recorded extensively as a session musician, both for record and broadcast.
Malcolm is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and also teaches at Middlesex University. Along with his close musical associate Andrew Bain, Malcolm co-directs the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, the orchestra they both started out in. Malcolm has taught on many summer schools, including Wavendon, Silsoe, Mediterranean Jazz Summer School and the Montgomery/Holloway Music Trust performance course.
