Located in the unique culture of Cuba, the Cuban Music School is based in Havana, which is itself one of the most vibrant and musically exciting cities in the world.
The main course will be held in a beautiful 16th Century converted Convento in 'Habana Vieja' - Old Havana, which is a world heritage site and centre for art restoration in Havana. Lonely Planet rates the Convent as one of the 'must stay in' places in Havana, and the Cuban Music School books the Convent exclusively for our 2 weeks.
The Convent provides music workshop rooms, classrooms, shared en-suite accommodation for up to 16 people and larger rooms for group accommodation. Breakfast and evening meals are provided by the Convent staff and eaten on the terrace.
The course also provides accommodation in nearby selected 'Casa Particulares' - Cuban homestays - and course members can make arrangements for their own accommodation if they prefer. (We can offer assistance with this).
The Convent is located in the centre of Old Havana - the heart of the old city - and surrounded by the real life of Cuba. It is a short walk from the Port on the famous 'Malecon' where Cubans stroll, chat and play music into the night, and from the 'Prado' with its Saturday art fair, and the 'Capitolio' - the Cuban 'White House'.
The school is surrounded by the bustling bars, restaurants and shops of Old Havana - many of which feature Cuban music.
Music is central to the Cuban way of life and you see and hear it everywhere. The school makes visits to the street Rumbas, the two world class jazz clubs, concerts and matinees and the famous Casa de la Musica.
The Playa de Este beach is 30 minutes from the school and in the past we have made a Saturday visit to the beach - laid in the sun, eaten fresh lobster, shrimp and fish and drunk the odd beer - a great thing to do in February!
The Cuban Music School offers an experience of Cuba and an insight into the Cuban way of life and its music that few tourists will experience.
Flights are not included and course members will make their own travel arrangements.
Direct flights to Havana are currently available with Virgin & Cubana, with Virgin generally being cheaper.
